Skywarn
is a concept
developed in the
1970's that was
intended to
promote a
cooperative
effort between
the National
Weather Service
and local
communities. The
individual,
known as a storm
spotter, takes a
position near
their community
and reports wind
gusts, hail
size, rainfall,
and cloud
formations that
could signal a
developing
tornado.
While it is true
that amateur
radio clubs and
individuals
donate their
time and
equipment to
participate in
Skywarn, you do
not have to be
an amateur radio
operator to
become involved.
All you need is
the willingness
and desire to
attend training
classes and
report
severe weather
conditions to
the National
Weather Service.
The NWS conducts
training classes
across the
United States.
